Single-molecule detection

Single-molecule detection refers to methods that observe individual molecules rather than measuring only bulk averages. Nanopores are useful for single-molecule sensing because each molecule can produce a distinct signal while interacting with the pore.

What can be detected

  • DNA and RNA molecules.
  • Peptides and proteins.
  • Small molecules and metabolites.
  • Biomarkers related to disease or environmental monitoring.

Why it matters

Single-molecule methods can reveal heterogeneity, rare events, molecular modifications, and transient interactions that may be hidden in ensemble measurements.
